I’ve been studying yoga for years and while I’ve certainly noted some of the benefits of being generally more limber in bedI don’t often say “Ow, that hurts,”Ive never really considered whether yoga could have a serious impact on my sex life.
But last week I saw a movie that had a well-cut yoga instructor in a Speedo showing couples how to do yoga together. Before you even go there, it was a PG-rated romantic comedy with famous actors. Soft porn, no. Cheesy, yes. But maybe they were on to something steamy.
First of all, yoga is all about breath, relaxation and reaching an alternate state of mind. Sounds a lot like sex, right?
Next, consider some of the usual yoga positions. Take the plow, for instance–where you lie on your back, put your legs together and swing your feet over your head. Now imagine where your partner would fit into the scenario.
Or what about downward dog? Or the child’s pose gone adult? Or even the dead man’s pose–flat on your back, eyes closed, palms up, legs splayed outward.
I’m not talking Tantric sex or anything remotely so arduous. I had a brush with that in my singles and it was very time-consuming. This is just getting a little frisky with the yoga.
Of course, youll likely have to deal with the very real possibility that your partner has never set foot in a yoga studio and having to explain the positions while simultaneously accomplishing them.
Or maybe he has just enough knowledge to be dangerous. My husband took exactly one yoga class with me and likes to call downward dog the “dowwwwwn and dirty dog.” Trust me, it’s hard to get in the mood when you are giggling uncontrollably. Sex, like yoga, requires a certain amount of focus and concentration.
If you really want to get serious about bringing your yoga game into the bedroom, theres a video series called Better Sex Through Yoga (www.bettersexthroughyoga.com), with instruction for beginner through advanced levels.
Downright sexy, right? Just remember, its all fun and games until someone says, “Ow, that hurts!”
